Akshaye Khanna, a versatile actor known for his roles in films like Dil Chahta Hai, Border, and Taal, has often been compared to his contemporaries such as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, and Akshay Kumar. While these actors achieved superstardom, Khanna’s career trajectory took a different path. In a candid interview with Anurradha Prasad, he addressed these comparisons and shared his perspective on stardom.

The Role of Destiny in Stardom
When questioned about not attaining the superstar status of his peers despite delivering iconic performances, Khanna responded thoughtfully. He emphasized that becoming a superstar often hinges on the films one is part of. He stated, “As an actor, your films make you superstars. You need Gadar, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Hum Aapke Hain Koun! Then you become a superstar. You can’t do anything. You can just try from your side. If you get those films in your destiny then it happens.”

Khanna likened this to a businessman with a successful venture who, despite his achievements, isn’t recognized as a mogul unless he attains a certain level of fame. He questioned the notion that success is only validated by reaching the heights of stars like Shah Rukh Khan, stating, “Until I become Shah Rukh Khan, won’t I see success or become a star?”

Embracing a Different Path
Reflecting on his unique journey, Khanna acknowledged that in a country with over a billion people, only a select few become lead actors. He expressed contentment with his career and choices, stating that if staying relevant in the industry required constant reinvention, attending every party, giving numerous interviews, or engaging in controversies, he would prefer to step away rather than compromise his values.

He further addressed the comparisons with other stars, expressing that he never felt disappointed about not achieving the same level of fame. He remarked, “No, never. Kya nahi diya bhagwan ne mujhe (What has God not given me).” He acknowledged that some perceive him as living in a cocoon, but clarified that he isn’t the flamboyant type and doesn’t seek to be.

Recent and Upcoming Projects
Akshaye Khanna continues to make significant contributions to Indian cinema. He recently portrayed Emperor Aurangzeb in Laxman Utekar’s Chhaava, a historical action film based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The film, which also starred Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, became the highest-grossing film of the year so far, earning ₹806.45 crore worldwide at the box office.

Looking ahead, Khanna is set to appear in Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar. The film, currently under production, also stars Ranveer Singh and Sanjay Dutt in key roles. Khanna’s continued involvement in diverse and impactful projects underscores his commitment to his craft and his unique position in the film industry.

Akshaye Khanna’s perspective on stardom reflects a deep understanding of his journey and the industry. His focus on meaningful work over the pursuit of fame highlights his dedication to his art and his contentment with the path he has chosen.
