Maharaja Review
: Vijay Sethupathi Shines in a Realistic Portrayal, Anurag Kashyap Surprises with a Strong Performance
Director Nithilan Swaminathan, who made his debut in 2017 with the critically acclaimed crime thriller “Korangu Bommai,” returns to the screen after seven years with “Maharaja.” This thriller marks Tamil star Vijay Sethupathi’s 50th film.
“Maharaja” revolves around the titular barber, played by Vijay Sethupathi, who leads a simple life focused on two things: his daily job and caring for his daughter, Jothi. His routine is unchanging and runs like clockwork. Jothi, a budding sports champion in high school, looks up to her PT teacher (Mamta Mohandas), who is a great source of encouragement. The father-daughter relationship is unique, with Jothi often acting as the parent. A shared quirk between them is their affection for a dustbin they fondly call ‘Lakshmi’.
Vijay Sethupathi delivers a realistic and compelling performance as the humble barber, while Anurag Kashyap surprises audiences with his strong portrayal in the film. The dynamic between the characters, the simple yet profound storyline, and the nuanced performances make “Maharaja” a noteworthy addition to Tamil cinema.
Despite living a simple life in his happy bubble, Maharaja finds himself in a police station one day, determined to file an FIR because ‘Lakshmi’ has been stolen from his home. The police dismiss his request as silly, but Maharaja refuses to leave until his complaint is taken seriously. What is actually going on, and where does this story lead?
Nithilan Swaminathan has crafted a slow-burning thriller with “Maharaja.” In the first half, we are introduced to numerous seemingly irrelevant characters. However, as the story progresses to the intermission, it becomes clear that there are bigger things at play. The second half connects the dots, revealing why Maharaja is unwavering in his mission to find Lakshmi. The film gradually unveils the layers of its plot, making for a compelling and intriguing watch.
Maharaja” is a highly engaging story, though it is not without its flaws. The non-linear narrative can confuse viewers if they do not closely follow the plot. However, it is this complexity that makes it stand out as more than just a straightforward crime thriller. With red herrings and intricate sub-plots, “Maharaja” keeps the audience engaged and eager to see what happens next.
Interestingly, while the female characters have smaller roles, they are crucial to the story. At its core, the film explores a father-daughter relationship that will resonate emotionally with the audience and perhaps even prompt reflections on their own familial bonds.
In terms of performances, Vijay Sethupathi is undoubtedly a standout. His portrayal of Maharaja is both realistic and emotionally compelling. The nuanced evolution of his character throughout the film is skillfully brought to life by Sethupathi, and the writing by director Nithilan Swaminathan deserves recognition for this.
An unexpected delight in the film is Anurag Kashyap, who delivers a strong performance as a common man with different shades, stepping away from his usual roles, such as playing a cop. Natty, Mamta Mohandas, and Abhirami also deliver commendable performances, adding depth to the story.
