The Allahabad High Court granted anticipatory bail to Sushil Singhania, the uncle of the estranged wife in the Bengaluru techie suicide case, on Monday. Justice Ashutosh Srivastava issued the order after hearing the anticipatory bail plea filed by Singhania’s family. Senior counsel Manish Tiwary, representing the accused, argued that the wife, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law of the deceased had already been arrested by Bengaluru police.
The anticipatory bail application was filed exclusively for Singhania, who faced significant media scrutiny following the viral circulation of the suicide note and a video recorded by the deceased. Tiwary highlighted that Singhania was elderly and “virtually incapacitated,” which suggested he could not have played a role in abetting the suicide. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court ruled in favor of pre-arrest (transit) anticipatory bail for Singhania.
The court set conditions, including the requirement of two sureties of ₹50,000 each, and directed him to cooperate with the police investigation. Additionally, he was instructed not to influence any witnesses or leave the country without prior court approval. The deceased, Subhash, had left a 90-minute video explaining his side of the story. His suicide note accused his wife of demanding ₹2 lakh in monthly maintenance for their minor son, with an initial request for ₹1 crore, which later escalated to ₹3 crore.
The Bengaluru police charged the wife, her mother, brother, and uncle with abetment of suicide under various sections. The wife was arrested in Gurugram, Haryana, while her mother and brother were detained in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. They were brought to Bengaluru on Saturday and sent to judicial custody for 14 days after appearing in court.
