Bharat Taxi Launched:
Govt-Backed Cooperative Platform Takes on Ola, Uber and Rapido The government on Tuesday unveiled Bharat Taxi, a cooperative-led ride-hailing platform designed to offer a strong alternative to private aggregators such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido.
The initiative, launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, aims to empower drivers, promote fair earnings, and bring greater transparency to India’s fast-growing mobility sector. Unlike existing ride-hailing platforms that operate on commission-heavy models, Bharat Taxi is structured as a cooperative, where drivers are key stakeholders rather than just service providers.
The model is expected to reduce dependency on private aggregators and ensure that a larger share of earnings goes directly to drivers. According to officials, the platform has been developed with a focus on driver welfare, affordability for passengers, and data transparency. By minimizing intermediary commissions, Bharat Taxi seeks to offer competitive pricing to customers while improving income stability for drivers. The launch comes amid growing concerns from drivers’ unions across the country over rising commissions, unpredictable incentives, and lack of social security on existing platforms. Government representatives said the new service is aligned with the broader vision of strengthening cooperative institutions and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Bharat Taxi will initially roll out in select cities, with plans for a phased nationwide expansion. The platform is expected to support multiple ride categories and integrate digital payment options, ensuring convenience for users while maintaining regulatory compliance. Industry experts believe the entry of a government-backed cooperative platform could significantly alter the dynamics of India’s ride-hailing market. While Ola and Uber dominate the sector, Bharat Taxi’s success will depend on its execution, driver adoption, and customer experience. As the service goes live, all eyes will be on how Bharat Taxi balances public welfare objectives with operational efficiency in a highly competitive market.
If successful, it could mark a major shift toward cooperative-driven digital platforms in India’s gig economy.
