BJP Criticizes Rahul Gandhi’s Election Commission Remarks in Boston: Accuses Him of ‘Entitled Child Syndrome’
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following his recent comments about the Election Commission of India (ECI) during an event in Boston, USA. Gandhi’s remarks, questioning the integrity of the ECI and alleging irregularities in Maharashtra’s voter rolls, have sparked a political controversy.
Rahul Gandhi’s Allegations
While addressing the Indian diaspora in Boston, Rahul Gandhi raised concerns about the Maharashtra Assembly elections, citing an increase of 65 lakh voters between 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM on election day. He questioned the feasibility of such a surge, suggesting it was “physically impossible.” Gandhi also claimed that the ECI refused to provide videography of the voting process and subsequently changed laws to prevent such requests.
These statements echo earlier allegations made by Gandhi in February 2025, where he questioned the addition of over 39 lakh new voters in Maharashtra within five months, a number he found disproportionate compared to previous years. He demanded transparency from the ECI regarding the voter lists and suggested that the opposition might seek judicial recourse if satisfactory explanations were not provided .
BJP’s Response
The BJP has vehemently opposed Gandhi’s comments, accusing him of undermining Indian institutions abroad. Party spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill labeled Gandhi’s behavior as indicative of “Entitled Child Syndrome,” criticizing him for allegedly insulting the nation and deflecting from his own shortcomings.
Pradeep Bhandari, another BJP spokesperson, took to social media to condemn Gandhi’s remarks, stating that questioning India’s democratic process on foreign soil reflects poorly on the nation’s image.
Shehzad Poonawalla, also from the BJP, accused Gandhi of consistently humiliating Indian organizations and institutions abroad. He emphasized that such actions suggest a broader agenda to discredit the country while opposing Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Election Commission’s Stance
In response to the allegations, the Election Commission of India has maintained that it will provide a detailed written response addressing the concerns raised by political parties, including the Congress. The ECI emphasized its commitment to transparency and fairness in the electoral process, stating that it values the views and suggestions of political stakeholders .
The controversy highlights the ongoing tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress party, particularly regarding the credibility of electoral processes. Gandhi’s remarks have intensified the debate over electoral integrity and the role of institutions in ensuring free and fair elections.
As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the Election Commission will address the allegations and whether this issue will influence public perception ahead of upcoming elections.
