UP Government Forms State Capital Region Similar to NCR: What You Need to Know

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced the formation of a State Capital Region (SCR), akin to the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi. This newly formed SCR encompasses the districts of Lucknow, Hardoi, Sitapur, Unnao, Rae Bareli, and Barabanki, covering a total area of 27,826 square kilometers.

On Friday, a notification was issued by the UP government, officially designating this region. The Uttar Pradesh State Capital Region Development Authority (UP-SCRDA) will have its headquarters in Lucknow and will be led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, with the state’s chief secretary serving as the vice-chairman, according to news agency PTI.

The formation of the SCR aims to address the population pressure on Lucknow and its adjoining districts. This initiative was spearheaded by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who initiated the project in September 2022. The decision comes in response to the challenges of unplanned development due to increasing population in these areas.

Yogi Adityanath emphasized that this strategic move is designed to cater to the future development needs of the state capital and its neighboring districts, ensuring better planning and infrastructure management for the growing population.

Addressing Unplanned Development

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized the need for the SCR to manage the increasing population pressure and unplanned development in and around Lucknow. “People from different cities want to come here and make their permanent residence. The population pressure is also increasing in the surrounding districts and many a times complaints of unplanned development are also received. In such a situation, keeping in view the future requirements, ‘Uttar Pradesh State Capital Region’ should be formed on the lines of National Capital Region (NCR),” he said, as reported by PTI.

The formation of the SCR aims to ensure better planning and infrastructure management for the growing population, catering to the future development needs of the state capital and its neighboring districts.
