Brain tumors can manifest a range of symptoms depending on their location. From headaches to seizures, here are key signs and symptoms to watch for.
“Brain tumors can present with a myriad of symptoms, some of which may seem unrelated or easily attributable to other, more benign conditions. However, seemingly innocuous signs and symptoms could potentially herald the presence of an underlying brain tumor. While classic symptoms like headaches, seizures, and focal neurological deficits are well-recognized, there are several surprising indicators that often go unnoticed or underappreciated by patients and healthcare providers alike,” says Dr. P.N. Renjen, Senior Consultant, Neurology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals.
Brain tumors
Persistent headaches: New, severe, or progressively worsening headaches, especially those exacerbated in the morning or by coughing or straining
Personality changes: Subtle shifts in personality, such as heightened irritability, apathy, or inappropriate behavior, may stem from the tumor’s impact on brain regions governing emotional regulation and impulse control
Vision problems: Tumors impacting the optic nerve, pituitary gland, or occipital lobe can lead to visual disturbances such as double vision, blurred vision, or partial or complete vision loss in one or both eyes.
Seizures: Although not all brain tumors result in seizures, the onset of unexplained seizures, particularly in adults, warrants further investigation to exclude an underlying brain tumor.
Weakness or numbness: Tumors applying pressure on particular brain or spinal cord regions may result in focal neurological deficits, such as weakness, numbness, or tingling in one or more limbs.
Balance and coordination issues: Tumors impacting the cerebellum or brainstem can present as challenges with balance, coordination, or gait, often misattributed to vertigo or inner ear issues.

Hormonal imbalances: Pituitary or hypothalamic tumours can disrupt the delicate balance of hormones, leading to symptoms like unexpected weight gain or loss, amenorrhea, or changes in libido, thirst, or urination patterns.
