Air Hostess Alleges Sexual Assault While on Ventilator in Gurugram Hospital; FIR Filed, Probe Underway
In a deeply disturbing case reported from Haryana’s Gurugram, a 46-year-old air hostess has alleged that she was sexually assaulted by staff members of a private hospital while she was unconscious and on a ventilator in the intensive care unit (ICU). The Gurugram Police confirmed the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) on Monday and have launched an investigation into the allegations.

According to officials, the woman was admitted to the hospital on April 5, after falling seriously ill following a swim in the pool of the hotel where she had been staying. Her condition required her to be placed in the ICU, where she was put on a ventilator the following day.

In her complaint, the air hostess stated that on April 6, while she was under intensive care and unable to move or speak due to being on life support, a hospital staff member sexually assaulted her. The assault allegedly occurred while she was unconscious and under heavy medical supervision.

The woman was discharged from the hospital on Sunday, April 14. It was only after returning home that she informed her husband about the traumatic incident. The couple then approached the police, leading to the registration of a formal complaint at Sadar Police Station in Gurugram.

CCTV Footage Being Examined
Police officials have taken the matter seriously and are in the process of examining CCTV footage from various parts of the hospital, especially the ICU area, in an attempt to identify the accused. The hospital has not yet made a public statement regarding the incident.

A spokesperson for the Gurugram Police said on Tuesday that the woman’s statement had been recorded before a magistrate under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which adds legal weight to her testimony. “We are closely reviewing the CCTV footage from the hospital premises to identify the person responsible. A team is working on gathering technical and forensic evidence, and we are confident the accused will be arrested soon,” the spokesperson added.

Legal Action Initiated Against Unidentified Accused
Based on the complaint, an FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for sexual assault. The FIR currently names “unidentified hospital staff” as the accused, and police have indicated that the identity of the perpetrator will be established soon based on video and physical evidence.

Sources indicate that the woman, an experienced airline professional, had come to Gurugram on a personal visit and was staying in a local hotel at the time of the incident. Her sudden illness led to emergency hospitalization, making her dependent on ventilator support during a critical 48-hour window—when the alleged incident occurred.

The case has sparked widespread outrage on social media and raised serious concerns about patient safety, particularly the vulnerability of unconscious patients in medical facilities. Many are questioning the protocols, ethics, and monitoring mechanisms in ICUs across private hospitals.

Previous Case Highlights Recurring Issue
The shocking case has emerged just days after another troubling report of sexual assault involving a minor girl surfaced from Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar. Earlier in April, police arrested a school van driver for allegedly sexually abusing a nine-year-old student over an extended period of one-and-a-half years.

According to police, the Class 4 student was being picked up and dropped home by the same driver daily. The matter came to light after the girl confided in her mother about the abuse she had been suffering. Following a family discussion, the parents filed a formal complaint with the police, leading to the arrest of the accused.

A senior officer from the Delhi Police said that preliminary medical examinations and counseling sessions confirmed the child’s allegations. “The accused took advantage of his routine proximity to the child and the trust placed in him by her family. He has been taken into custody, and further investigation is underway,” the officer added.

These back-to-back incidents have triggered alarm among citizens and rights groups alike, renewing calls for stricter checks, better surveillance, and legal accountability across institutions responsible for the care and safety of vulnerable individuals.

Public Outrage and Calls for Reform
Both cases have ignited public discourse around systemic lapses in institutions—whether medical facilities or educational transport systems—where trust is often taken for granted. In the Gurugram case, the alleged assault within a hospital’s ICU, a place meant for critical care and protection, has been particularly disturbing for many.

Patient rights groups and women’s safety advocates are demanding that hospital protocols be overhauled to include stricter background checks of medical and support staff, installation of more CCTV cameras in sensitive areas, and creation of internal grievance redressal mechanisms that are accessible even to incapacitated patients.

A senior advocate commenting on the Gurugram case said, “If this allegation is proven true, it is a gross violation of medical ethics, patient dignity, and human rights. The system must ensure this never happens again.”

Meanwhile, women’s rights organizations have urged authorities to consider fast-tracking the trial once the investigation is complete, stressing the need for exemplary punishment in such cases.

Investigation Ongoing
The Gurugram Police have assured that the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness. “No one will be spared. We are working round the clock to ensure justice is served,” the police spokesperson said.

Authorities have appealed to the public to avoid speculation and allow the investigation to proceed based on evidence and due process. The identity of the survivor is being kept confidential, in accordance with Indian law, to protect her privacy and dignity.

As both investigations continue—one in Gurugram and the other in Delhi—the spotlight remains firmly on the safety of vulnerable individuals in institutions that are expected to offer care, security, and trust.
