Indian Strikes in Pakistan Result in Deaths of Jaish-e-Mohammed Chief Masood Azhar’s Family Members and Close Associates

On May 7, 2025, Indian armed forces launched a series of targeted strikes under “Operation Sindoor,” aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure linked to the Pakistan-based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). The operation, which involved precision air and missile strikes on nine locations across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, resulted in significant casualties among JeM’s leadership.

Key Targets and Casualties

The strikes focused on facilities associated with JeM, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and Hizbul Mujahideen. Among the primary targets was the Markaz Subhan Allah in Bahawalpur, a known JeM headquarters. According to Masood Azhar, the leader of JeM, the attack on this facility led to the deaths of ten of his family members, including his elder sister and her husband, his nephew and his wife, and a niece. Additionally, four of his close associates were reportedly killed in the operation.

Azhar condemned the strikes, stating, “This cruelty has broken all boundaries. Now, no one should expect mercy,” reflecting the gravity of the situation and the personal losses suffered by the JeM leadership.

Strategic Significance of the Operation

The Indian government launched Operation Sindoor in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, including Indian and Nepali nationals. India attributed the attack to Pakistan-based militant groups, leading to heightened tensions between the two nations. The operation was described as a focused and measured response to dismantle terrorist infrastructure and deter future attacks.

International Reactions

Pakistan condemned the Indian strikes as an “act of war,” with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowing retaliation. In response, Pakistan claimed to have shot down five Indian fighter jets and reported civilian casualties from Indian artillery shelling along the Line of Control in Kashmir. The international community expressed concern over the escalating tensions, with calls for restraint and dialogue to prevent further conflict.

Conclusion

Operation Sindoor marked a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan, highlighting the persistent volatility in the Kashmir region. The targeted strikes on JeM facilities, resulting in the deaths of key leaders and their associates, underscore the complex and deeply rooted nature of the insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir. As both nations navigate this heightened crisis, the international community continues to urge for de-escalation and a return to diplomatic engagement to ensure regional stability.
