For the first time since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister of India, the BJP will rely on its allies to form the government. Despite the INDIA bloc’s efforts to court key politicians, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) extended its support to Narendra Modi on Wednesday. The NDA partners adopted a three-paragraph resolution in Hindi, declaring the BJP stalwart as “our leader.” The Varanasi MP is expected to take the oath of office for his third term as Prime Minister of India on June 8. Meanwhile, the Opposition’s alliance, which also convened in the national capital yesterday, issued a warning, stating that it will take appropriate steps at the right time to “realize the people’s desire not to be ruled by the BJP government.

At the NDA meeting, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who has emerged as a key figure following the Lok Sabha elections, reportedly urged Narendra Modi to expedite the formation of his third government.

Nitish Kumar, whose JD(U) secured 12 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar, reportedly urged Narendra Modi not to delay the formation of the government. The meeting, held in a cordial environment, saw NDA members praising Modi’s leadership. According to a source, the contentious issue of ministerial berths did not arise.

There was no discussion on the Cabinet formation, no negotiations. Nitish Kumar emphasized that since the election was lengthy and conducted over seven phases, the process of government formation should be expedited said a member familiar with the details.

TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu, whose party won 16 Lok Sabha seats, praised Narendra Modi, noting that winning the polls three times in a row was a remarkable achievement. There is reportedly a broad understanding that a mechanism should be established for members to discuss contentious issues. There are some items on the BJP’s agenda that some members may disagree with, requiring broader discussions,” another person familiar with the meeting told HT.

With 28 seats between them, Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu have become indispensable for the BJP.

The NDA secured a total of 293 seats, while the Congress-led INDIA bloc defied exit poll predictions by winning 234 seats. The narrow margin in seat numbers has emboldened the INDIA bloc, which reportedly reached out to some NDA allies seeking support for its own effort to form a government at the Centre. On June 7, the NDA MPs will formally elect Narendra Modi as their leader, after which the alliance leaders will meet the President of India to submit their letters of support.
