Security Agencies Release Suspect Sketches in Pahalgam Terror Attack That Killed 26
On April 22, 2025, security agencies released sketches of the suspects involved in the deadly terrorist attack on Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The assault, which occurred on April 22, 2025, resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, including 25 Indian nationals and one Nepalese tourist, with over 20 others injured.
The attack took place at Baisaran meadow, a popular tourist destination near Pahalgam known as “mini Switzerland.” According to eyewitnesses, the assailants posed as security personnel, asked for names, and demanded that victims recite the Islamic declaration of faith (kalma). Those who failed to do so were targeted. The attackers reportedly used M4 carbines and AK-47 rifles during the assault.
The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the attack. The group cited opposition to demographic changes in the region following India’s revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in 2019 as their motive.
In response to the attack, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short his visit to Saudi Arabia and returned to Delhi. Home Minister Amit Shah also rushed to Kashmir to assess the situation. Authorities suspect that the attackers may have crossed over from Kishtwar in Jammu and reached Baisaran via Kokernag in South Kashmir to carry out the strike.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from international leaders. U.S. President Donald Trump expressed full support for India, stating, “We stand strong with India against terrorism.” Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the attack as a “brutal crime” with no justification. Other world leaders, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also condemned the attack and expressed condolences.
Security forces have launched a massive manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators. A helpline has been established to assist affected tourists, and a temporary lockdown was imposed in parts of Pahalgam. The incident has disrupted the region’s tourism industry and reignited tensions between India and Pakistan.
The release of suspect sketches is part of ongoing efforts by authorities to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack. The sketches have been distributed to various law enforcement agencies, and public assistance is being sought in the investigation.
As the investigation continues, authorities are focusing on gathering intelligence and following leads to bring the perpetrators to justice. The attack has underscored the persistent security challenges in the region and the need for enhanced measures to protect civilians and tourists.
The release of suspect sketches marks a significant development in the investigation, and authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information that may assist in identifying the attackers. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing security concerns in Jammu and Kashmir and the challenges faced in ensuring the safety of civilians and visitors to the region.
