Details of the Pahalgam Attack
The assault took place in the scenic Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir. Survivors reported that gunmen, posing as locals or security personnel, approached tourists and asked them to identify their religion. Those who identified as Hindus were shot at point-blank range. The attack was claimed by a previously unknown group, the Kashmir Resistance. India has accused Pakistan of supporting the militants, while Pakistan denies involvement and calls for a neutral investigation.
India’s Response
In retaliation, India has taken several significant steps against Pakistan:
Suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, halting water-sharing from the Indus River and its tributaries.
Closed the Integrated Check Post at Attari and revoked the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani nationals.
Reduced the diplomatic staff strength at both High Commissions from 55 to 30.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh assured that India would trace not only those who perpetrated the attack but also those who conspired behind the scenes. He emphasized India’s zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism.
U.S. Involvement
Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed sorrow over the “horrific terrorist attack” and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to collaborating with India in the fight against terrorism. He also encouraged India to engage with Pakistan to de-escalate tensions and ensure peace and security in South Asia.
Escalating Tensions
Following the attack, there has been a rise in ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan has warned of a potential Indian military strike within 24 to 36 hours, citing “credible intelligence.” India has granted its armed forces full operational freedom to determine the response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
The international community has expressed concern over the escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors and has called for restraint and dialogue to prevent further conflict.
