Pahalgam Terrorist Attack
The Uri encounter comes just a day after a tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran meadow, a popular tourist destination. On April 22, 2025, militants opened fire on a group of tourists, resulting in at least 28 fatalities and over 20 injuries. The attack has been attributed to The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist group. The TRF claimed responsibility, citing opposition to demographic changes in the region as their motive .
National and International Reactions
The Pahalgam attack has drawn widespread condemnation from both domestic and international leaders. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on a state visit to Saudi Arabia at the time, cut short his trip and returned to New Delhi to assess the situation. He held a meeting with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval upon arrival. Home Minister Amit Shah also visited Srinagar to convene a meeting with top security officials.
International leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, have condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with India. U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who was visiting India, called it a “devastating terrorist attack” .
Ongoing Security Operations
In the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, security forces have intensified operations across the Kashmir Valley. A joint search and cordon operation involving the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police has been launched to apprehend the perpetrators. Helicopters have been deployed to locate the attackers, and a temporary lockdown was imposed in parts of Pahalgam. The region remains on high alert as authorities continue their efforts to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.
The recent events underscore the persistent security challenges in Jammu and Kashmir. While tourism has been a vital part of the region’s economy, incidents like the Pahalgam attack highlight the vulnerabilities faced by civilians. The Indian government remains committed to countering terrorism and ensuring peace and stability in the region.
