BJP Registers Massive Assam Comeback as Himanta Biswa Sarma Begins Second Consecutive Term

Himanta Biswa Sarma Sworn In Again as Assam CM, BJP Strengthens Grip on Northeast

Himanta Biswa Sarma Returns as Assam Chief Minister

Senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second straight term, marking a historic political moment in the state. The swearing-in ceremony was held in Guwahati in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president J.P. Nadda, and several NDA leaders from across the country.

Sarma’s return to power comes after the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured a massive majority in the 126-member Assam Assembly, continuing the saffron party’s growing dominance in the Northeast. The NDA reportedly crossed the 100-seat mark, while the BJP alone emerged with a commanding performance in the elections.

Political analysts say the victory reflects the BJP’s deep organizational network, welfare outreach programs, and Himanta Biswa Sarma’s strong personal popularity across Assam.

Historic Moment for Assam Politics

With this swearing-in, Himanta Biswa Sarma has become the first non-Congress leader in Assam’s history to return as Chief Minister for a consecutive second term. The achievement is being seen as a major milestone for the BJP in a state that was once considered a Congress stronghold.

The BJP leadership projected the Assam result as proof of continued public support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governance model and the NDA’s development agenda in the Northeast.

During the ceremony, loud cheers and celebrations erupted among BJP supporters gathered in Guwahati, with party workers calling the result a “historic mandate” for stability and development in Assam.

New Cabinet Takes Shape

Along with Sarma, several ministers from BJP allies including the Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front also took oath as members of the new cabinet. Leaders such as Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora, Charan Boro, and Ajanta Neog were among those inducted into the ministry.

Sources within the BJP indicate that the cabinet could be expanded further in the coming days, with focus areas expected to include infrastructure, employment, border security, and welfare schemes.

Former minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass has also reportedly been chosen as the NDA candidate for the Assam Assembly Speaker’s post.

BJP’s Northeast Strategy Gets Bigger Boost

The Assam victory is being viewed as another major success for the BJP’s long-term Northeast expansion strategy. Over the past decade, the party has significantly strengthened its influence across the region, using Assam as its primary political base.

Observers believe Himanta Biswa Sarma has emerged as one of the BJP’s most influential regional leaders due to his aggressive campaigning style, administrative control, and strong communication strategy.

His government’s focus on infrastructure projects, eviction drives against alleged encroachments, welfare schemes, and cultural identity politics played a major role in shaping the election narrative.

Latest Developments

Soon after taking oath, Himanta Biswa Sarma signaled that his second term would focus heavily on land protection, welfare expansion, and stronger governance measures. Reports suggest the government may intensify eviction drives and launch fresh infrastructure initiatives in the coming months.

Meanwhile, the BJP leadership is celebrating Assam as one of its biggest electoral victories of 2026, especially after strong performances in multiple northeastern constituencies. Political observers believe the Assam mandate could further strengthen the BJP’s national momentum ahead of future elections.
