Rahul Gandhi Targets PM Modi Over Viral ‘Melodi’ Moment, Says India Facing ‘Economic Storm’

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the now-viral “Melodi” moment with Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, accusing the government of ignoring serious economic challenges while focusing on publicity-driven diplomacy.

The criticism came after PM Modi gifted “Melody” toffees to Giorgia Meloni during his Rome visit, a symbolic gesture that reignited the internet-famous “Melodi” trend. Videos and photos from the meeting quickly went viral online.

Reacting to the viral moment, Rahul Gandhi said the Prime Minister was busy “handing out toffee” while a major economic crisis was building in the country.

According to reports, Gandhi remarked:

“An economic storm is raging.”

He alleged that the government was prioritising image-building and foreign tours instead of addressing inflation, fuel prices, unemployment, and economic instability affecting ordinary Indians.

The Congress leader also accused the Centre of creating an economic structure that benefits a handful of powerful industrialists while placing increasing pressure on the middle class, farmers, labourers, and small businesses.

What Triggered the ‘Melodi’ Controversy?

The political attack followed PM Modi’s recent meeting with Giorgia Meloni in Rome during his multi-nation diplomatic tour.

A short clip shared online showed Modi presenting “Melody” chocolates to Meloni — a playful reference to the internet nickname “Melodi,” created by combining their surnames. The video instantly exploded across social media platforms.

Supporters celebrated the interaction as a sign of warm India–Italy ties, while opposition leaders questioned whether such moments were distracting attention from domestic economic concerns.

Rahul Gandhi Repeats ‘Economic Storm’ Warning

This is not the first time Rahul Gandhi has warned about an impending economic crisis.

During recent public addresses in Uttar Pradesh, he claimed:

  • Fuel price pressures are increasing
  • Economic inequality is widening
  • Small businesses are under stress
  • A severe financial slowdown may hit ordinary citizens hardest

He also criticised government austerity appeals linked to the ongoing West Asia crisis while accusing the Prime Minister of continuing extensive foreign travel.

BJP Responds to Opposition Criticism

The BJP and government ministers pushed back strongly against Rahul Gandhi’s remarks.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman defended the Modi government’s economic policies, stating that welfare schemes for farmers, women, youth, and MSMEs remain central to governance.

BJP leaders also described Rahul Gandhi’s criticism as politically motivated and accused the opposition of attempting to politicise a diplomatic interaction.
