Historic Tamil Nadu Cabinet Expansion: 21 TVK MLAs, 2 Congress Leaders Take Oath in Vijay Government

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay carried out a major cabinet expansion on Thursday, inducting 23 new ministers into his government in what is being described as a historic political moment for the state.

The expansion included 21 legislators from Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and two MLAs from the Indian National Congress, marking Congress’ return to the Tamil Nadu government after nearly six decades.

Congress Returns to Tamil Nadu Cabinet After 59 Years

The induction of Congress MLAs S. Rajesh Kumar and P. Viswanathan has become one of the biggest talking points of the expansion.

Political observers say this is the first time in 59 years that Congress leaders have formally joined the Tamil Nadu cabinet, signalling a major shift in the state’s alliance politics.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge reportedly approved the inclusion of the two MLAs after discussions with alliance leadership.

AICC general secretary K. C. Venugopal called it a “historic occasion” for the party.

Vijay Expands Government Strength

The swearing-in ceremony took place in Chennai in the presence of Governor Rajendra Arlekar.

The expansion significantly increases the strength of the Vijay-led administration, which had initially begun with a smaller cabinet after the dramatic 2026 Assembly elections.

The latest cabinet reshuffle is being viewed as:

  • An effort to stabilise alliance management
  • A move to strengthen governance representation
  • A signal of deeper cooperation between TVK and Congress
  • A strategy to prepare for future local body and parliamentary elections

No IUML or VCK Ministers Yet

Despite speculation before the expansion, no ministers from:

  • Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)
  • Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK)

were inducted into the cabinet for now.

Sources suggest discussions over broader coalition representation may continue in the coming weeks.

Tamil Nadu Enters Coalition Era

Political analysts say the cabinet expansion marks the beginning of a new coalition era in Tamil Nadu politics after decades dominated by the DMK–AIADMK rivalry.

Vijay’s rise to power earlier this month already broke several long-standing political patterns in the state.

The TVK-led alliance currently enjoys support from Congress and outside backing from Left parties and regional allies.

Latest Political Developments

Recent reports indicate:

  • The expanded cabinet may receive fresh portfolio allocations soon
  • Discussions continue regarding alliance coordination and governance structure
  • The opposition DMK has intensified attacks on the new administration over governance and coalition compromises
