Amid Rising Temperatures in UP, Akhilesh Yadav Attacks Yogi Govt on Power Supply Issues

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday criticised the Uttar Pradesh government over ongoing power cut complaints, claiming the BJP administration has been unable to manage the electricity situation during the severe heatwave.

Power Cut Complaints Trigger Political Reactions

Akhilesh Yadav also questioned the state government’s response to growing public frustration over frequent electricity cuts. Reacting to the deployment of Pradeshik Armed Constabulary personnel at power substations, he claimed that the BJP government was attempting to silence criticism instead of addressing the hardships being faced by residents dealing with prolonged outages during the intense summer heat.

The Samajwadi Party chief alleged that people across several districts were struggling with unscheduled power cuts, especially in rural and semi-urban areas where electricity disruptions were reportedly affecting daily life, businesses, water supply and students preparing for examinations. He further accused the government of focusing more on image management than solving the ground-level problems linked to electricity supply.

The remarks from the opposition leader came even as the Uttar Pradesh government defended its handling of the power situation, maintaining that the state has achieved record levels of electricity distribution despite rising demand during the heatwave. The government also highlighted improvements in infrastructure, increased generation capacity and higher peak demand fulfilment figures as proof of better power management in recent years.

Electricity Usage in Uttar Pradesh Climbs 113% in 12 Years

Uttar Pradesh’s electricity consumption has witnessed a massive rise over the last 12 years, signalling not just growing demand but also major changes in the state’s power infrastructure. The increase has largely been driven by an expanding consumer base and improved electricity supply hours, which have contributed to higher overall usage across the state.

According to data released by the Uttar Pradesh State Load Dispatch Centre (UPSLDC), annual power consumption increased from 76,574.6 million units (MU) in 2012-13 to 1,62,858.1 MU in 2025-26 — marking a growth of more than 113%. During the same period, average daily electricity consumption also surged from 209.8 MU to 445.7 MU, highlighting the sharp rise in energy demand in Uttar Pradesh.

Energy Minister Defends Power Management With Record Supply Claims

Meanwhile, A. K. Sharma stated that Uttar Pradesh has recorded its highest-ever electricity supply, adding that the state is continuously creating new milestones in power distribution and demand fulfilment.
