Kerala Chief Minister Decision Faces Another Delay
The suspense over Kerala’s next Chief Minister continues as the Congress party has once again postponed the official announcement regarding its leadership choice. Party leaders indicated that ongoing consultations at the highest level, along with Sonia Gandhi’s recent hospital visit, contributed to the delay in finalizing the decision.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front recently secured a major electoral victory in Kerala, returning to power after a fiercely contested Assembly election. However, despite the mandate, the party has yet to publicly announce who will lead the new government.
Senior Congress leaders have reportedly been holding multiple rounds of discussions in New Delhi and Thiruvananthapuram to build consensus among various factions within the state unit.
Sonia Gandhi’s Health Visit Adds to Delay
According to party sources, Congress parliamentary chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s visit to the hospital for a routine medical check-up disrupted scheduled meetings of the party’s central leadership, delaying the final decision-making process.
The Congress high command reportedly wanted all senior leadership consultations completed before making any formal announcement, especially given the political significance of Kerala after the party’s strong performance in the state.
Party insiders suggested that Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge are also closely involved in discussions aimed at avoiding internal disagreements after government formation.
Multiple Names Continue to Circulate
Several senior Congress leaders remain in contention for the Chief Minister’s post. Former opposition leader V.D. Satheesan is reportedly among the strongest contenders due to his aggressive campaign style and strong support base among younger legislators.
At the same time, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala and a few other experienced UDF faces are also believed to be under consideration as the party weighs factors such as caste balance, regional representation, and long-term political strategy.
Political observers say the delay reflects the Congress leadership’s attempt to prevent factional tensions that have historically affected the party in Kerala.
UDF Leaders Urge Quick Resolution
Several newly elected UDF legislators have reportedly urged the Congress high command to finalize the leadership issue quickly so that the new government can begin functioning without uncertainty. Supporters gathered outside party offices in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi throughout the day, waiting for an official announcement.
Meanwhile, opposition parties have started criticizing the Congress for the delay, claiming the party appears divided despite winning the election.
The CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front questioned why the Congress leadership was struggling to finalize a leader even after securing a majority mandate from voters.
Latest Developments
Congress sources indicate that another round of discussions is expected later tonight in Delhi before a final decision is announced. The swearing-in ceremony may now be pushed back by at least another day depending on when the leadership issue is resolved.
Meanwhile, security and administrative preparations for the formation of the new Kerala government are already underway in Thiruvananthapuram as officials await confirmation from the Congress leadership.
Political analysts believe the final choice for Kerala Chief Minister could significantly shape the Congress party’s future strategy ahead of upcoming national political battles.
