Four Children Among Eight Wounded in Coney Island Shooting During July 4 Celebrations
Four Children Among Eight Wounded in Coney Island Shooting has become one of the most shocking incidents to mar the United States’ Independence Day celebrations this year. A masked gunman opened fire on a family gathering in Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood late on the night of July 4, leaving eight people injured, including four children between the ages of six and fourteen. Authorities have launched an extensive investigation as the suspect remains at large.
The shooting occurred at approximately 10:35 p.m. in the courtyard of an apartment complex near West 30th Street and Surf Avenue, just blocks from the famous Coney Island boardwalk where thousands had gathered earlier to watch Independence Day fireworks. According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the attacker approached the gathering wearing dark clothing and a ski mask before opening fire and fleeing the scene on foot.
Family Celebration Turns Into Tragedy
Witnesses said families were enjoying a holiday barbecue when gunfire suddenly erupted, causing panic among adults and children alike. Several people ran for cover while others attempted to help the injured before emergency responders arrived.
Police officers and paramedics rushed to the scene within minutes. Images from the incident showed officers carrying injured children to ambulances as bystanders looked on in shock. A firearm was recovered at the scene, along with multiple shell casings, but investigators have not yet confirmed whether more than one weapon was used.
Victims Include Four Children
According to the NYPD, the victims include four children aged 6, 7, 12 and 14, as well as four adults. The youngest victim, a six-year-old boy, suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach.
A 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition after being shot in the chest, while the remaining seven victims are reported to be in stable condition and are expected to recover. All eight victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment immediately after the attack.
NYPD Launches Massive Investigation
The New York Police Department has launched a citywide search for the suspect, who fled immediately after the shooting. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby buildings and businesses while interviewing witnesses who attended the gathering.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said investigators are exploring every possible lead. Authorities have not yet announced a motive, and no arrests had been made as of the latest official update.
Mayor Condemns Gun Violence
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the attack, describing it as unacceptable violence that has devastated families during what should have been a joyful national holiday.
City officials expressed support for the victims and pledged that law enforcement agencies would use every available resource to identify and arrest those responsible. The mayor also emphasized the city’s commitment to improving public safety despite recent declines in overall shooting incidents across New York City.
Community Left In Shock
Residents of Coney Island described scenes of fear and confusion as the shooting unfolded near one of Brooklyn’s busiest holiday destinations. Many families had gathered after watching fireworks at the nearby boardwalk when gunshots suddenly interrupted the celebrations.
Local community leaders have called for increased police patrols and stronger measures to prevent gun violence during large public events. The incident has once again reignited debate over public safety during national celebrations across the United States.
Investigation Continues
Investigators are examining forensic evidence recovered from the scene while asking members of the public to come forward with any information that could assist the investigation. Authorities are also reviewing nearby surveillance cameras to determine the suspect’s movements before and after the shooting.
Police have not ruled out any possible motive, including whether the attack was targeted or random. Officials said the investigation remains active and additional updates will be released as more information becomes available.
