Mumbai Police investigation reveals zinc phosphide rat poison — not watermelon itself — caused the deaths of four Dokadia family members in Pydhonie.

Rat Poison, Not Watermelon, Caused Death of Mumbai Family of Four: FSL Report

Mumbai Family Death Mystery Takes Dramatic Turn: Rat Poison, Not Watermelon, Behind Tragedy

The mysterious deaths of four members of a family in Mumbai’s Pydhonie area have taken a shocking turn after forensic investigations confirmed that a highly toxic rat poison — not watermelon itself — caused the fatalities.

Authorities revealed that traces of zinc phosphide, a dangerous chemical commonly used in rodenticides, were found in both the bodies of the victims and the watermelon they had consumed shortly before falling critically ill.

The victims — Abdullah Dokadia, his wife Nasreen, and their two teenage daughters Ayesha and Zainab — died within hours after developing severe vomiting, breathing difficulties and abdominal distress late last month.

Forensic Report Changes Direction of Investigation

Initially, investigators suspected food poisoning linked to watermelon consumption after the family reportedly ate the fruit after dinner. However, the latest report from the state-run Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) has now confirmed poisoning caused by zinc phosphide.

According to police officials, the toxic substance was detected in:

  • Liver and kidney samples
  • Stomach contents and bile
  • Spleen and abdominal fat samples
  • Pieces of watermelon recovered from the house

Deputy Commissioner of Police Pravin Mumde said investigators are now examining whether the poisoning was accidental, suicidal or homicidal.

What Happened That Night?

Police said the Dokadia family hosted relatives for dinner at their residence in south Mumbai on April 25. Everyone reportedly consumed chicken biryani during the gathering without any issue.

Later that night, after guests had left, the four family members ate watermelon at around 1 am. Within a few hours, all of them developed intense nausea, vomiting and breathing problems. They were rushed to hospital but died one after another by the morning of April 26.

The fact that only the Dokadia family consumed the watermelon became a key clue in the investigation.

Latest Investigation Updates

The case has now become one of Mumbai’s most disturbing forensic mysteries in recent years.

According to reports:

  • FSL experts conducted 54 separate tests before confirming poisoning
  • No rat poison container or packet was found inside the family’s home
  • Police are analysing mobile phones and deleted messages
  • Investigators are probing whether the watermelon was contaminated intentionally or accidentally

Forensic officials reportedly said the poison appeared to be present inside the watermelon rather than injected externally, making the source of contamination even more puzzling.

What Is Zinc Phosphide?

Zinc phosphide is a highly toxic chemical widely used in rat poison. Once consumed, it reacts with stomach acid and releases phosphine gas, which can rapidly damage internal organs and lead to death.

Medical experts say symptoms may include:

  • Severe vomiting
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Organ failure
  • Sudden collapse

Unlike many other rodenticides, zinc phosphide has no specific antidote, making poisoning extremely difficult to treat.

Police Probe All Angles

Mumbai Police have not ruled out any possibility so far. Officials are investigating:

  • Possible accidental contamination
  • Deliberate poisoning
  • Suicide pact theories
  • Vendor-level tampering

Investigators also noted that the family’s relatives, who ate dinner with them earlier in the evening, did not fall ill because they never consumed the watermelon.

Why This Case Has Shocked Mumbai

The incident has triggered widespread concern because the poisoning occurred through an everyday food item consumed inside the family’s own home.

The case has also raised fresh questions regarding:

  • Safe handling of toxic rodenticides
  • Food contamination risks
  • Monitoring of hazardous chemicals
  • Urban pest-control practices

Authorities are expected to intensify the investigation over the coming days as forensic experts continue analysing evidence linked to the case.
