U.S. National Held At Nepal Border After Giving Contradictory Accounts, Officials Say
A U.S. national has been arrested near the India-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh after allegedly attempting to cross into Nepal through an unauthorised route without carrying valid travel documents. During questioning, officials said the man repeatedly changed his version of events, prompting security agencies to launch a detailed investigation into his identity, travel history, and purpose of entering the border area.
The incident has raised fresh security concerns along the sensitive Indo-Nepal border, where authorities have intensified checks amid increasing cross-border movement.
American National Caught Near Sonauli Border
According to officials, the man has been identified as Jordan Brown, a 36-year-old resident of California. He was intercepted by personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) near Border Pillar 516 in the Mainihwa area of Maharajganj district, close to the Sonauli border crossing.
Authorities alleged that Brown attempted to cross into Nepal through an unauthorised footpath instead of using the designated immigration checkpoint. When security personnel stopped him for a routine document check, he allegedly tried to flee but was caught with the help of local villagers.
No Passport Or Valid Documents Found
Officials said Brown was not carrying a passport, visa, or any other valid identity document at the time of his arrest. The absence of travel papers immediately raised suspicion, leading authorities to subject him to detailed questioning.
During the interrogation, investigators found inconsistencies in his statements regarding his travel route, purpose of visit, and personal background. Police said he was unable to provide verifiable details about several claims he made.
Contradictory Statements Raise Suspicion
According to investigators, Brown gave multiple and often conflicting accounts of his movements.
He claimed to have travelled to nearly 70 countries and said he had arrived in India after visiting Bali, Indonesia. In another statement, he reportedly told officials he had spent several weeks in Goa before travelling through Bengaluru, Lucknow, and Gorakhpur on his way to the Nepal border.
He also claimed that his passport was with an acquaintance in Bengaluru and said he intended to meet a Nepalese contact known only as “Naz.” However, he was unable to provide complete addresses or reliable contact details for the individuals he mentioned. These inconsistencies prompted authorities to verify every aspect of his story.
Claims Of Military Service Under Verification
Brown also reportedly told investigators that he had previously served in the U.S. Navy and Special Forces before leaving military service around two years ago. He further claimed that he had studied at the University of California and was married to an Indian woman from Uttarakhand.
Officials, however, said none of these claims have been independently verified. Security agencies are coordinating with relevant authorities, including the U.S. Embassy, to establish his identity and authenticate the information he provided.
Multi-Agency Probe Underway
The unusual circumstances surrounding the arrest have led multiple security agencies to join the investigation. Officials are examining Brown’s travel history, digital records, possible international links, and the reasons behind his attempt to cross the border without proper documentation.
Reports also indicate that investigators are exploring whether he may have travelled through Myanmar before arriving in India, though no official conclusion has been reached so far.
Why The Case Is Significant
The India-Nepal border allows relatively easy movement for Indian and Nepalese citizens under existing bilateral arrangements. However, foreign nationals are required to carry valid passports, visas, and immigration clearances while crossing the border.
Security experts say any attempt by a foreign citizen to cross through an unauthorised route without documentation is treated seriously, particularly when accompanied by conflicting statements and unverifiable claims.
Final Take
The arrest of U.S. national Jordan Brown near the India-Nepal border has drawn the attention of multiple security agencies after officials said he repeatedly gave contradictory accounts during questioning. With no valid travel documents in his possession and several aspects of his story yet to be verified, authorities have widened their investigation to determine his identity, travel history, and intentions. The outcome of the probe is expected to provide greater clarity in the coming days.
