Who Was Chandranath Rath? Ex-IAF Veteran and Suvendu Adhikari’s Trusted Aide Shot Dead
Ex-IAF Officer to Suvendu Adhikari’s Trusted Aide: Who Was Chandranath Rath?
The shocking killing of Chandranath Rath, one of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s closest aides, has triggered a major political storm in West Bengal just days after the state assembly election results.
Rath, widely known within BJP circles as Adhikari’s “Mr Dependable,” was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas late Wednesday night. According to police sources, motorcycle-borne attackers intercepted his vehicle and opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene.
From Indian Air Force Veteran to Key Political Strategist
Chandranath Rath was not a conventional political aide. Before entering politics, he reportedly served in the Indian Air Force for nearly two decades. Known for his disciplined lifestyle and low-profile personality, Rath later took voluntary retirement and briefly worked in the corporate sector before transitioning into political organisational work.
Originally from Chandipur in Purba Medinipur district, Rath shared a long-standing association with the Adhikari family. Sources familiar with the family said his relationship with Suvendu Adhikari went back years, even before the BJP leader’s switch from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to the BJP.
Rath officially joined Adhikari’s inner political circle around 2019 and gradually emerged as one of the BJP leader’s most trusted coordinators. He handled administrative operations, campaign logistics, internal coordination and constituency management, especially during high-stakes battles such as Nandigram and Bhabanipur.
Party insiders often described him as a behind-the-scenes operator who preferred work over publicity.
‘Mr Dependable’ of Suvendu Adhikari
Within the BJP organisation in Bengal, Chandranath Rath had earned a reputation for reliability and loyalty. Senior BJP leaders referred to him as Adhikari’s “Mr Dependable,” saying he managed everything from legislative coordination to election-related groundwork.
BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul reportedly described Rath as the person who handled nearly all operational responsibilities linked to Adhikari’s political activities. Another BJP leader, Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury, called him a “dear friend” and said he largely remained away from direct political limelight despite his crucial role.
Sources within the BJP also claimed there had been speculation that Rath could receive a larger administrative responsibility if the party strengthened its position further in Bengal politics.
Latest Updates on the Murder Investigation
The murder has dramatically escalated political tensions in West Bengal after the BJP’s strong electoral performance in the recently concluded assembly polls.
Police officials have launched a large-scale investigation, examining CCTV footage and forensic evidence from the crime scene. Preliminary reports suggest sophisticated firearms, possibly Glock pistols, may have been used in the attack, leading investigators to probe whether professional contract killers were involved.
Following the incident, security deployment was intensified in several sensitive areas of North 24 Parganas.
Suvendu Adhikari termed the killing a “cold-blooded” and “pre-planned” murder, alleging that the attackers had conducted surveillance before executing the attack. However, he appealed to party workers not to take the law into their own hands and urged them to trust the investigation process.
Meanwhile, the ruling TMC condemned the killing and demanded a CBI probe into the matter, saying the incident was unacceptable and required an impartial investigation.
Why This Case Matters
The killing of Chandranath Rath has quickly become one of the most discussed political developments in Bengal after the elections. The incident has reignited debates around political violence in the state and intensified confrontation between the BJP and the TMC.
Political analysts believe the murder could have long-term implications for Bengal’s already tense political atmosphere, particularly as accusations and counter-accusations continue between rival parties.
For many within BJP ranks, Rath’s death is being viewed not only as the loss of a trusted organiser but also as a direct blow to one of the party’s most influential political camps in Bengal.
